Background In taking forward its School of Ambition plans, Barrhead High School teaching staff considered potential opportunities to raise confidence and attainment levels in its pupils. Through this dialogue, some difficulties with extended writing tasks in certain SQA courses were highlighted. A number of departments, particularly those of Art, Music, Physical Education and Geography, felt that these difficulties could present potential barriers to the optimum academic achievement of a significant number of pupils. In response to these concerns, a member of the English department was seconded to work in collaboration with these departments, and to look at ‘writing’ in these curricular areas.
