In S1 and S2 pupils will undertake a wide variety of tasks which will hone and build on the skills they acquired in Primary School.
These tasks cover most forms of Literacy and Communication.
WRITING
Pupils will be encouraged to write in different styles and for different purposes, including, when and where appropriate :
Functional and Informative – Personal and Reflective – Argumentative and Discursive – Creative and Imaginative - Critical Essay assignments.
READING
Pupils will engage with a variety of both Fiction and Non-Fiction texts in order to build on their knowledge and understanding of such techniques as : grammar – punctuation - inference – writer’s craft – vocabulary – imagery – note-taking.
LISTENING AND TALK
Pupils will be expected to listen carefully to instructions and act upon them – listen attentively to information and retain the knowledge – listen respectfully to all class members and pay close attention to aural and visual media texts.
Pupils will also be encouraged to be involved in class /group discussion – both formal and informal and to be confident in the art of solo presentations to their peers.
ASSESSMENT
Pupils are formatively assessed by their class teacher throughout the year and when sufficient evidence is secured pupils will then be presented at the appropriate level.
Current S1 and S2 pupils will be assessed in Reading and Writing using Scottish National Assessments which cover Levels A to F.
In keeping with the Scottish national average the majority of learners will achieve Level E in Reading and Writing by the end of second year.
