S5 & S6 At Barrhead High School

More and more Barrhead High School pupils are recognising the advantages to be gained from staying on for a Fifth and Sixth year prior to progressing to Higher or Further Education or entering the job market. In S5 students study five subjects selected from a range at Higher or Intermediate levels. In S6, students choose from a range of courses at Advanced Higher, Higher or Intermediate, refining their choice to suit university and college requirements.  We also expand and enhance our senior curriculum by cooperating with other schools in the Authority, with Reid Kerr and Langside colleges, thus ensuring the best possible choice for students.

In S6 students may wish to study for additional Higher and Intermediate courses or progress to Advanced Higher. In S6 students negotiate a curriculum with the school, but all are encouraged to make maximum use of their year and gain as many qualifications as possible. S6 offers students who are considering entry to a particular, specialised University course the opportunity to involve themselves in work shadowing to gain experience in their preferred field of study.

S6 pupils are also encouraged to 'give-back' some of their time to the school in the form of Prefect duties, as Buddies to new S1 pupil and in Paired Reading Scheme with S1 and S2 pupils to require support. They also have the opportunity to become a prefect or even Head Boy or Head Girl.

Participation in these and many extra-curricular activities complements the academic work of the school to produce mature, rounded young people able to cope with the changing world of today.
